Nothing By Chance
Genesis 29:1-12
His experiences at Bethel began a new life for Jacob. After he had established a memorial to God, "Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east" (Gen. 29:1).
The phrase "Jacob went on his journey" is literally "Jacob lifted up his feet." Jacob probably traveled quickly--as if walking on clouds.
Remember the day you received Christ as Saviour? Or the day when you met God in a special way? Perhaps you made a great decision or had a great victory. Didn't it seem as if you were walking on a cloud?
No doubt that is how Jacob felt with his new outlook. The revelation of God's presence and the assurance of blessing brought light and encouragement to his heart.
Jacob came to a well where some men were watering sheep. When he asked if they knew Laban, they replied that they did. They assured him that Laban was well and said, "Behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep".
What a unique meeting! God had promised Jacob He would be with him, and this meeting with Rachel was not by chance or accident. This is the way God also works in our lives.
We may go a certain direction, but we never get out of God's sight. All that happened to Jacob was by divine appointment--there is no such thing as chance as far as God is concerned.
"Being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will" (Eph. 1:11).

The Little Things
by Lori Esses
It's the small gestures to which we cling.
At the start of my summer at Syracuse University, far away from home with no family and no friends there, I found In my clothing trunk small gifts wrapped in silver paper, tucked away in my Converse sneaker, in the folds of a towel, in the hood of my oversized sweatshirt. They were small gifts from my mother, droplets of affection; an alarm clock, a pack of chewing gum, hair bands, upbeat greeting cards, hidden away. These token gifts were a connection to her. See, I miss you. See, you matter. See, don't be lonely.
It is the small gestures to which we cling.
In a drawer in my home I have a thank you note from a teacher for a gift I sent her at the birth of a baby. The baby is four now, and I can't let go of the card. It has the standard thank you, and the "we appreciate," and then a bonus -- two more sentences tailored to me, personalized and very touching.
I heard a story of a couple in marital turmoil. It goes something like this: The husband was going away on a business trip, and he suggested to his wife that this time he stay away a little longer. His plans were built on both their misery. She was devastated, but she understood. The night before his trip she felt the hollowness of the moment before something sacred is lost, and she tried something new. She cut out slips of paper and wrote I Remembers:
I remember the night our son was born and we were driving through the snow to the hospital and I was so scared, but I felt so safe because I was with you.
This was someone we very much wanted to honor.... Read More |

Workaholism
Next Steps / Related Information
by Elaine Minamide
How can workaholics break the cycle of addiction? The first step is recognizing the problem. Debra Weaver, a pastor's wife and mother of four who teaches part time at her children's school, recently made the decision to step down as director of women's ministries at her church after she recognized the toll her busyness was taking on her relationships at home.
“I was constantly on the phone or on the computer, and as a result, I was constantly getting mad at my kids,” she recalls. “I knew it was time to give it up. For me, it was a matter of trusting God: Do I really believe that if I invest my time where God wants me to invest it — in my family — He will bless my ministry?”
Rebecca Robeson, a self-admitted workaholic, is not yet free of her workaholism. But she is becoming aware that she has a problem. Whenever she finds herself caught in the destructive cycle of work addiction, she thinks of a friend and mentor named Brenda. “Brenda has learned to say no,” Rebecca says. “It irritates me, because she refuses things I wish she'd agree to do. More often than not, though, she says no to something good in order to say yes to something better — her family and her relationship with the Lord.”...Read More |

Wisdom to lead
"Father you have called me to lead men in a world that is unforgiving and where I am the one that others will look to for answers when things go wrong. I will be the one that my men will look to in combat. I will be the one who will make the decision to send my men into harms way. The responsibilities that I have been entrusted with, few can understand or even comprehend. I ask you for strength in my daily duties that are both seen and unseen.
Your word says that to whom much is given much will be required and that if we ask for wisdom you would give it abundantly and freely. As my men will draw to me may I draw closer to you. I ask you to fill me with abundance of wisdom and courage to lead daily. May I have the courage to be a righteous man and a man of integrity. Help me to lead with fairness, integrity and most of all with humility.
Help me to remember that I am not here for me, but for my men and my department. Bless me with the strength, wisdom and courage to lead my team into inmate combat situation with great victory as you blessed David and his men to great victories. Father I ask for favor both in inmate combat situations and with my administration as I prepare my team for battles that will be fought behind these walls.
I ask now that you would make me into the Commander that you have called by name."
Amen
