"Chappy's" Word

Happy New Year Fellow Operators

Yes another year has come and gone, it seems as though they go by quicker each year. Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older, well in any case with this New Year comes new beginnings.  2007 can and will be an awesome year for many of you.  There are many victories to be won and ministries to be started.  Specialized Teams that have struggled can be renewed this year through prayer and rededication to God and each other. Think of the possibilities if we all come together on one accord, the victories would be mountainous. Our families and loved ones can be drawn closed again in love.

We are all aware of the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions, each year we pick something to pay more attention to.  We resolve to loose weight, quit arguing, eat healthier, take our vitamins etc. . .  All these are good things to pursue but consider the following. . .Click here to Read More

Jewish Reflection Of The Month

Chanukah in Iowa

by Miriam Meir

I was the only Jewish child in the auditorium, and sometimes felt I was the only Jewish girl in the entire world.

My younger sister and I were the only Jewish children attending Monroe Elementary school in Davenport, Iowa in the sixties. In most ways I was just like any other little girl in the Midwest. I went sledding in the winter and caught fireflies in the summer. Only a few symbols formed my Jewish identity. For instance, the mezuzah on our front door was my daily reminder that I was part of a Jewish family.

Like most red-blooded Americans enjoying the freedom of living in the melting pot, the extended family gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving with all the trimmings (our stuffing actually had farfel, which was purchased across the river in Rock Island, Illinois from the kosher deli). However, this attitude of "when in Rome" did not extend to the next holiday. As the orange, yellow and brown displays in the supermarkets were replaced by green and red, a voice from within said, "This is not mine."

Each year, I would have to break in a new teacher. This happened in the fall. I was just an ordinary student, maybe a bit more gabby than the rest, until Rosh Hashana approached and I would quietly inform the teacher that I'd be missing school.

"Oh, you're Jewish?" was the usual response.

Once through the Jewish holiday season, my Jewishness was forgotten until the X-mas recital. Suddenly, my Jewish roots were recalled and considered of great educational importance. For this glorious gathering the entire school body was squeezed into the auditorium to hear speeches, a few carols, and view the lighting of my Chanukah candles.

This practice, year after year, tended to be the show stopper. The night before, I would carefully choose the nine candles according to some color pattern that I felt would make the best impression. These candles were promoting the entire Jewish religion and culture, competing with large evergreen trees covered with tinsel, lights and ornaments. As I took center stage and set my menorah onto a tabletop, I was amazed by the total silence around me. It was a silence that impressed upon me -- more than the gratuitous applause that would follow -- that I was doing something important...that being a Jew was important.

Lighting the shamash with a match was not a particularly religious aspect of the menorah lighting, but being nine years old and allowed to use fire added an air of authority to the ceremony. In a loud, clear voice I would recite the blessings according to the tune my father taught me. Then, one by one I would light all eight candles. It was usually not the last day of Chanukah when I made this presentation, but I felt it was important for everyone there to know that Chanukah was celebrated for eight days.

The Power of Teachable Moments

Looking for teachable moments with your child? Marianne Hering offers helpful tips.

by Marianne K. Hering

A rainbow, a tube of toothpaste, a holiday dinner — how can these ordinary things be used to teach kids about the Bible? They can all be used to illustrate a "teachable moment." The teachable-moment method of faith building enlightens your children about God in a way that captures their attention and changes their lives. No lectures. No manuals. No rolling of the eyes. No kidding!

A "teachable moment" is like creating an on-the-spot commercial for biblical principles using simple, everyday language and familiar objects. If you see a beautiful tree growing near a lake, for example, you can point it out and say to your child, "Isn't that tree magnificent? God says that people of faith are like that tree. Trees stay strong because they grow near the water. People stay strong when they grow closer to God."

Once you discover the three ingredients of a teachable moment, you will have a method to make a life-changing spiritual impact through everyday events. A teachable moment gives you the resources to make the Bible relevant to your children today, right now, this very moment

Teachable moments are perfect for working or single parents who don't have a lot of free time to build a spiritual legacy. They can be incorporated into any family routine, no matter how busy. Teachable moments require no preparation. In fact, they often work best when you're driving in the car or just having plain old fun with your kids.

But whenever you do have a chance, also try planning a teachable moment. Either way, your children will feel affirmed and will learn biblical principles that they'll never forget.

A Commander's Prayer

Wisdom to lead

"Father you have called me to lead men in a world that is unforgiving and where I am the one that other will look to for answers when things go wrong. I will be the one that my men will look to in combat. I will be the one who will make the decision to send my men into harms way.
The responsibilities that I have been entrusted with, few can understand or even comprehend. I ask you for strength in my daily duties that are both seen and unseen.

Your word says that to whom much is given much will be required and that if we ask for wisdom you would give it abundantly and freely. As my men will draw to me may I draw closer to you. I ask you to fill me with abundance of wisdom and courage to lead daily. May I have the courage to be a righteous man and a man of integrity. Help me to lead with fairness, integrity and most of all with humility.

Help me to remember that I am not here for me, but for my men and my department. Bless me with the strength, wisdom and courage to lead my team into inmate combat situation with great victory as you blessed David and his men to great victories. Father I ask for favor both in inmate combat situations and with my administration as I prepare my team for battles that will be fought behind these walls.

I ask now that you would make me into the Commander that you have called by name."
