Prison officers blame riot at Mountjoy on overcrowding - Ireland

PRISON officers have blamed chronic overcrowding for the weekend riot by over 70 inmates at Mountjoy Jail. There are current 609 inmates in the facility, which was only designed to hold 420 prisoners. The Prison Officers Association (POA) last night demanded an urgent meeting with prison management after one of its members, who was reportedly smashed in the face with a fire extinguisher during the riot, suffered serious facial and dental injuries.

TWO inmates at a prison near Rugby were able to build themselves a make-shift ladder which they used to scale the perimeter fence. Aaron Clelland, 31, and Terry Lunnon, 29, were serving medium-term prison sentences at HMP Onley when they simply climbed over the fence and escaped.

Jailbirds' 500 assaults on prison staff - UK

Prison wardens and staff in Kent are attacked by inmates twice a week, a new report indicates. Official figures obtained by the Conservative Party show there were 500 assaults at nine Kent jails from 2003 to 2007 – 100 a year. The Prison Officers Association called on the Government to better protect those working in jails. Edward Garnier, the Tories’ shadow justice minister, told KOS Media: “Five hundred assaults on Kent’s prison officers is a shocking figure.

Gang members call shots from prison: - Canada

An area criminologist says that a gang riot that took place at the Edmonton Institution two weeks ago will have an effect on the street and that the ring leaders of a number of gangs are controlling their street armies from the inside. “They’re the senior board members and are in many cases the ones calling the shots,” said Grant MacEwan criminology professor Bill Pitt. “These are the guys that have been in prison before, committed a lot of serious crimes and are looked up to in the criminal fraternity.”

I predict a riot: What prison officer chief said about Mountjoy Prison - Canada

Prison officers predicted the riot in Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison in which a warder had all his teeth kicked out. Two investigations were launched after the mayhem and thuggery which began when inmates barricaded themselves into a recreation room. The Prison Officers Association (POA) yesterday blamed the disturbance on overcrowding.

Guards furious as prisoner's assualt case dismissed - AU

The Northern Territory Prison Officers' Association says a magistrates decision to dismiss the case against a prisoner charged with assaulting a guard could pave the way for more attacks on prison officers. Earlier this month, magistrate Daynor Trigg dismissed an assault charge against 36-year-old prisoner James Paul Daniels, who was alleged to have kicked a guard in the groin while he was being taken back to his cell at Berrimah Jail.
