Prisoner absconds from Castle Huntly open jail

 A 38-year-old violent criminal has gone on the run after absconding from Castle Huntly open jail near Dundee.

Garry McGeown, who was jailed for serious assault and drug offences, was on home leave in Glasgow but failed to return to the prison on Wednesday.

He was last seen in the Westercraigs area of Glasgow at 1000 BST on Tuesday.

McGeown is described as being 5ft 8in tall with black hair and is of a slim build. He has brown eyes and was clean shaven when last seen.

Prisoner installed safe to preserve possessions in jail

 A prisoner took crime prevention advice to heart by putting a safe in his cell to protect his valuables from fellow inmates who might have been tempted to do a little thieving.

The safe was found during searches at Kennet prison near Liverpool and confiscated by staff. In another cell, officers at the 334-inmate jail found a tattoo machine along with needles, ink and tattoo patterns.

Last night the Prison Officers Association (POA) labelled the ease with which glass is available in all UK prisons as “simply immoral”, pointing to cost saving as the only reason for its continued existence in jails.

Officers hurt in riot at Addiewell Prison

A second prison officers was injured in a disturbance at Scotland's newest prison, it has emerged.

Emergency services were called to Addiewell Prison in West Lothian after up to 10 prisoners rioted on Monday.

One of the officers was hit by a pool cue in the incident. It is not known how the second officer was hurt.

Neither of the officers is thought to have sustained serious injuries. The incident was brought under control a short time later.

It is understood the disturbance was sparked after an inmate was told his methadone was to be reduced.
