Newport News prisoner gives false name, released

An inmate at the Newport News jail escaped on Friday by pretending to be an inmate whose name was called for release, the sheriff’s office said.

Reginald B. Hurt, 32, walked out the front door of the jail about 10:20 p.m. Friday and is at large, a news release said.

Here’s how he did it:

A deputy sheriff went to a holding cell and called out the names of three men who were to be released on bond.
