Typo costs prisoner 3 extra years in Indonesia

 JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A Thai man has been released from an Indonesian prison after spending three extra years behind bars because of a typo in his paperwork, a report said Friday.

Kamjai Khong Thavorn, 53, should have been released in 2007 after serving a 20-year sentence for heroin possession but a clerical error wrongly stated his first year in prison as 1997 instead of 1987, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Prisoner absconds from Castle Huntly open jail

 A 38-year-old violent criminal has gone on the run after absconding from Castle Huntly open jail near Dundee.

Garry McGeown, who was jailed for serious assault and drug offences, was on home leave in Glasgow but failed to return to the prison on Wednesday.

He was last seen in the Westercraigs area of Glasgow at 1000 BST on Tuesday.

McGeown is described as being 5ft 8in tall with black hair and is of a slim build. He has brown eyes and was clean shaven when last seen.

Prisoner installed safe to preserve possessions in jail

 A prisoner took crime prevention advice to heart by putting a safe in his cell to protect his valuables from fellow inmates who might have been tempted to do a little thieving.

The safe was found during searches at Kennet prison near Liverpool and confiscated by staff. In another cell, officers at the 334-inmate jail found a tattoo machine along with needles, ink and tattoo patterns.

Maghaberry prisoners end protest

A protest by dissident republican prisoners, who barricaded themselves into a dining room at Maghaberry prison, has ended.

The prison service said it ended peacefully, but it is not known if the prisoners gave themselves up or if the threat of force was used.

The prisoners were 16 Continuity IRA members, 10 Real IRA and two INLA.

A group linked to the Continuity IRA said the protest, which started on Sunday, was over prison conditions.

Prisoner blamed for Moloto crash

B.C. prison guard in hospital after assault by inmate

VANCOUVER — A guard at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre is in hospital after an assault by a prisoner, says the guard's union. Dean Purdy, spokesman for the B.C. Government Employees Union, said a prisoner in the segregation unit "seriously assaulted a guard," around 3 p.m. on Tuesday using his hands and feet. The guard, who had worked at the jail for about 10 years, suffered many fractures and required surgery, Purdy said.
