The United States Penitentiary--McCreary in Pine Knot is under lockdown after an inmate assault.

A U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson said an inmate on inmate assault injured three inmates. Officials have not released any details on what happened.

Prison staff quickly contained the situation. No staff members were injured.

The inmates went to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not released the identity of the inmates or the extent of their injuries, but said they are all in stable condition.

Officials have placed the prison under lockdown while the investigation into the incident continues. Until the lockdown is lifted, inmates will be restricted to their living quarters and routine activities, including visitation, will be restricted.

Officials said the institution is secure and they have accounted for all the inmates. The incident posed no threat to public safety.
