D.C. jail inmate who shot at police now on the run after escape

A D.C. jail inmate charged in a wild shoot-out with District police escaped from custody Thursday morning and remains on the run, authorities said.

At about 8:50 a.m., jail guards were taking 28-year-old Terrence Moore to Greater Southeast Community Hospital for medical treatment. At the hospital, he jumped from the vehicle and hopped into a maroon Cadillac, jail officials said.

They are trying to determine how Moore was able to remove his restraints during transport.

Officers were able to get the Cadillac's license plate number, which is a D.C. tag CX3623. Moore, a District resident, is described as a black male, 5 feet 10 and weighing about 200 pounds with braids in his hair. He was last seen wearing a two-piece navy jail-issued uniform.

Anyone who believes they have seen Moore or the vehicle in which he fled is asked to immediately call 911.

Moore was awaiting trial on charges of assault with intent to kill from an incident in March 2009 in Southeast Washington.

In that incident, members of the D.C. narcotics unit approached a group of people in a high-crime area, when Moore separated from the group and took off running. Officers were chasing Moore when he kicked in a locked door to enter a residence in the 3800 block of First Street SE, according to charging documents.

The officers followed Moore into a bedroom and Moore yelled, "I got a gun!" Police said he shot several rounds from a .38-caliber semiautomatic at police, who were only three feet away. None of the officers were injured.

Police returned fire, striking Moore four times. He retreated into a bedroom and locked the door.

Police evacuated the people living in the home, and called in members of the emergency response team, who told Moore to surrender peacefully.

But police said Moore told them, "I'm not going back to prison... no matter what."

Moore surrender an hour later and was taken to Howard University Hospital.
